Men In Fellowship
The Men of St. John’s have been meeting in fellowship for six years now and are entering 2025 in rude health and vigour. We aim to meet up to socialise, network, discuss issues of the moment frivolous or serious, and to think through the problems of society from the standpoint of Christians today.
We have continued to blend the serious and the light-hearted in our programmes.
In 2024 we met for breakfast on three occasions at which we discussed Buddhism with the Abbott of Chinthurst Monastery, the high and lows of being a Bishop in the Church of England with a retired Bishop and how to resolve the pressures which a Christian local councillor faces in the Council Chamber.
Our visits to places of interest took in Portsmouth Cathedral with a tour, a mass and a great lunch overlooking Portsmouth Harbour which contrasted with a summer’s day out for steam nerds at the Hollycombe Working Steam Museum.
And we interspersed these activities with morning walks in the Surrey countryside, concluding our contemplation of nature with a hearty pub lunch.
Our activities attract numbers varying from a dozen to 30 or so. It is very democratic in considering new ideas and autocratic when it comes to the detail. The basis of our being is Christian, but we welcome anyone of any or no faith. You just have to be polite in debate, open in argument and prepared to help with the washing up.
