Friends of St. John's - THE NIGHT THE CLOCKS WENT FORWARDS AND BACK
THE NIGHT THE CLOCKS WENT FORWARDS AND BACK
That was the night of the Friends of St John’s Quiz. As we entered British Summer Time we had a great quiz raising over £600 for the Save our Stones campaign. That’s to cover the cost of repairs to the Church tower, replacing the crumbling stonework from around the belfry louvre openings. The tower had been built in 1842 and lumps of weary stone have been falling off.
The repairs now complete, cost some £5,500, which is at a rate of £30 a year since 1842. The Friends aim to turn the clock back to 1842 by as many years as they can manage. So last night’s £600 knocked 20 years off the target.
The intellectual might of the Friends was concentrated on quiz master Allen Johnson’s tricky questions and to the surprise of many, including themselves, the Bell Ringers came first among the eight competing teams.
Refreshed by a hearty portion of fish and chips and chocolate brownies, we all went home having put the clock back and to remember to put the clocks forward for BST in the morning.
To join Friends of St. Johns please see their website www.fostj.org. It will only cost you £5 a year.
